And now
The Spider Creator Story
"I have a little story for you. While we wait for coffee." Domano said.
"This was in the time when our world was not yet finished. It still looked like the Spider-Creator's web in many places. Lots of the animals and plants had not been put in the world yet. Spider-Creator and her helpers were fixing humans together.
"The helpers make the humans so they can talk like the animals, with their minds and the movements of their webs. This seemed fine. But the old human woman was not pleased.
"She says to Spider-Creator, `How can my people ever find the many wonders of your webs? They will be happy and content to stay forever in these fields and forests with the beast brothers. They will have no challenge. They will never know beyond the beauty of the day in the field.'
"She knew these things because she was one of the firstborn and traveled very far with the helpers and Spider-Creator.
"`Well,' said Spider-Creator, `I seek to please and fulfill you. I want good things for you because you are my daughter. What do you want for your people?'
"The old woman said, `Look at them. They have all they could want. They will never roam to the edge of your webs to find your secrets. Take speech from them. Make them work to find how to talk.'
"And one of the helpers said, `If we do this, the humans will not know they have any friends. They will surely be sad and could all die.'
"And the old woman said, `And if you do not, who on Earth will be moved to search the heavens to find you?'
"Spider-Creator said, `You are both right. How will you keep them from dying?'
"The helpers said, `The old woman will keep her speech and knowledge. She will go back among them and tell them of all the many wonders at the ends of the world so that they never forget to strive. She will remind them of how they used to talk and how they will learn to talk again.'
"This is how the first shaman came to be.”
